Botswana

The expansive Kalahari Desert covers over 70 percent of this Southern African nation. In addition to the desert, the country has three other primary landscapes, including the Okavango Delta Swamps, the Tsodilo Hills, and the Kanyu Flats.

The capital city of Gaborone, on the southeast border with South Africa, is home to only about 250,000 people and holds the primary of several international airports. Although it's the country’s capital and largest city, it has a calm, small-town feel and a drive of only a few minutes will allow you to escape the city and find yourself in more wild spaces.

Botswana is most well known for its Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a unique inland delta in the northwest of the country, and Africa’s largest of its kind. It has permanent swamps and seasonally flooded grassland and is home to a range of wildlife including cheetahs, rhinos, wild dogs, and lions. On the east side of the Okavango Delta is Moremi Game Reserve, the first reserve solely founded by local residents.

Near the town of Kasane on the border with Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia is Chobe National Park, with the Chobe River drawing wildlife and birdlife even in dry seasons. In the northeast of the country, the Kanyu Flats is a system of small salt pans that is ideal for seeing birds and other small and rare wildlife.

Located in Botswana’s Selinda Reserve, which links the Okavango Delta with the Linyanti waterways, is a private 320,000-acre reserve.

This lodge was created in homage to elephants and you’re sure to see them – they’re even known to swim by the camp from time to time.
