Discover

| dəˈskəvər | verb - to find something or someone unexpectedly or in the course of a search.

We are glad you’ve discovered us.

Now, its our turn to help you discover the perfect safari.

When the old mapmakers would get to the edge of the known world, they would write the words:

BEYOND THIS PLACE, HERE BE DRAGONS.

The idea was simple. There is always an edge of the known and beyond that edge, there is always something to be conquered and overcome along the route to discovery. In the connected world we live in today, there is significantly less to be explored and uncovered for the first time. However, each of us has an edge to our own personal known. At Wildland Collective, we want to help share what we know, our expertise and experience, to help you expand your personal boundaries and to overcome and uncover your dragons, whatever they may be.

We hope that you will take some time to discover the stories, the wildlife, the landscapes found in the links and pages below. Take notes, share the stories and never stop dreaming. Let us know what stories, pictures, pages and ideas you found interesting and we can use that information to help build the perfect safari for you.

Spend the night at a 4-million star lodge.

Filled with the tales of journeys long past and lived on through names littering the trails such as Shipton, Mackinder and Tilman, Mount Kenya is Africa’s second tallest mountain behind Kilimanjaro. On its slopes, a small cabin called Rutundu sits unassuming, but grander than life itself. This is where Prince William proposed to Kate.

See a Super Tusker before they are gone.

There are approximately 20 super tusker elephants remaining in the world. A super tusker is an elephant with Ivory that weighs 100 pounds or more per tusk. The genetic pool for these large-tusked elephants resides mostly in the Tsavo and Amboseli ecosystems in Eastern Kenya. Many of these super tusker genes were the first to go during the poaching crisis in the ‘90s and 2000s. Elephants’ habitat across Sub-Saharan Africa is changing rapidly and these giants may not be around for future generations. The time to see them is now.

Safe ground for Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas.

A male silverback gorilla from the Ntambara family moves through the forest of Volcanoes National Park in Northern Rwanda. In the background are two other volcanic peaks in cloud cover. These volcanoes and the forests on their slopes are some the last remaining safe habitat for the mountain gorilla. Rwanda’s protection of this species and subsequent tourism push has meant the gorilla population is expanding.

Northern Kenya’s wild dog pack aptly named ‘The Phoenix Pack’ because they did just that…rose from the ashes. Wild dog have been listed as an endangered species since 1990 and, in northern Kenya, the wild dog population was pretty much annihilated in 2017 due to an outbreak of canine distemper. Over the past 3-4 years, the Phoenix pack have made a spectacular comeback to a healthy number. Here, a group of youngsters checks out a remote camera on the ground.

At the northern end of the Afar depression lies a cinder-cone volcano called Dallol. In the Cushtic-Afari language, Dallol roughly translates to ‘disintegration’ which is the word the Afari use to describe the acidic ponds created from the volcano. The discharge is a type of brine or high salinity water mixed with acidic liquid similar to what you’d find in the pools at Yellowstone National Park in the US.

Have breakfast interrupted by a gentle giant.

In Kenya’s remote north, the Ewaso Nyiro River carves a strand of deep oasis in the middle of the arid desert and forms the Samburu National Reserve. The narrow band of vegetation surrounding the river creates one of the most stunning elephant habitats in the world. It is here you can dine with these gentle giants as they eat the fruits from the doum palm trees scattered through camp. Samburu reserve is known for its intimate elephant encounters and warm Samburu warrior cultural experiences.
