Africa’s Great Migration

See Kenya & Tanzania’s great wildebeest migration.

“In Africa you have space… there is a profound sense of space here, space and sky.”

- Thabo Mbeki

Imagine being surrounded by over 1 million wildebeest.

Each year between July and November, over 1 million wildebeest move into Kenya’s Masai Mara ecosystem. This migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park into Kenya forces the wildebeest to cross the iconic Mara River where they must face the gauntlet of hungry lion and crocodile.

Each year, over 1 million wildebeest visit Kenya’s Masai Mara.

Do you want to be witness to the migration of a lifetime?

The lions of the Masai Mara wait all year for the highly anticipated arrival of the herds coming north from Tanzania. Following the fresh scent of new-fallen rain, the wildebeest move across the plains in search of green grass for grazing. Congregations in the hundreds of thousands and up to one million wildebeest move from their calving grounds in Tanzania up through the Serengeti and across the Kenya/Tanzania border. As they do, they are forced to cross the Mara River and thus ensues the mayhem caused by crocodile-infested waters and opportunistic big cats waiting for them on the other side.

At Wildland Collective, we offer migration safaris at all different levels of luxury. For the ultimate in exclusivity and luxury, enjoy a Ker & Downey Private Mobile Camp on the banks of the Sand River or stay at one of the many luxury lodges scattered across the greater Mara ecosystem. The migration is somewhat unpredictable and can occur between the end of July through to early November. For the best chance at hitting the migration in full force, we recommend an August and September timeline. Planning 2-3 days in the Mara mixes well with other locations across Kenya.

Camps & Lodges

Perched high atop the Mara escarpment, Angama provides some of the best views of any lodge in the entire Mara/Serengeti ecosystem. You don’t even have to leave your room for an amazing sundowner experience.
