Desert
The oppressive heat of the day gives way to cool nights as the sun drops below the horizon. The sand below your feet still holds some of the warmth that earlier would have burned. Although the desert can be a place that threatens survival, it becomes clear that, while many things perish here, what is left is especially resilient and unique. Africa’s nine deserts, from the Danakil (with its multi-colored salt lakes) to the Chalbi (which includes beautiful Lake Turkana) to the Namib (with its iconic rusty dunes), have their own unique features. But in each, the harsh, unforgiving climate produces a special beauty unlike any other landscape.
