The Moon Houses - Kenya Coast
The Moon Houses
Experience the magic of the Kenyan coast from the historic village of Shela.
Shela, located on Lamu Island, is a beautiful village a short boat ride or walk from Lamu’s Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Walk through narrow alleys, passing by large, intricately carved wooden doors, to eventually reach one of the many Moon Houses of Shela. From the outside, it’s impossible to predict the luxury you’ll find on the other side. Rooftops overlook the tall buildings around you and the nearby ocean. Palm trees and bougainvillea flowers pepper your view and you can see people and donkeys walking in the paths below. Although the sight of the ocean is almost always accessible, a brief walk will take you to a sandy beach where you can swim in the sea. For sundowners, wander down to Peponi Hotel or enjoy your drinks on a dhow ride. Shela itself has plenty to offer, but you can always explore further, visiting Lamu town, Manda Island, or other excursions.
