Rutundu Cabins, Mount Kenya

Spend the night at a 4-million star lodge.

Filled with the tales of journeys long past and lived on through names littering the trails such as Shipton, Mackinder, and Tilman, Mount Kenya is Africa’s second tallest mountain behind Kilimanjaro. On its slopes, a small cabin called Rutundu sits unassuming, but grander than life itself. This is where Prince William proposed to Kate.

Relax and reset in a rustic cabin.

Escape the demands of the modern world on the slopes of Mount Kenya.

We sat there, cozied up around fire for hours, sipping on warm whiskey drinks, telling old tales of lion encounters, reviving the sweet memories of past trips, and sharing in the stories of each other’s worlds. That is what the wilderness is for. For sharing old memories together and creating new ones, new stories that someday we will tell the generations that come behind us and others which we will keep just for us.

At 12,000 feet, Lake Rutundu is a haven for large, equatorial rainbow trout. This retreat is an excellent stopover after a few busy days on game drives because it allows you to completely disconnect and focus on deep conversations with friends, a good book, or a little bit of hiking, fishing, or picking protea flowers.

The cabins are quaint, off-grid, and beautifully rustic.
